FAQ’s

Where can I find a South African bakery in London?

Wild Goose is an artisan South African bakery based in London, with locations in Forest Gate and Leytonstone. We specialise in sourdough, seasonal baking, and South African-inspired food made with traditional recipes.

Is there a South African bakery in the UK?

Yes, Wild Goose is one of the few bakeries in the UK focused on South African baking, combining heritage recipes, artisan techniques, and a strong sense of community.

What South African food do you sell?

Everything we make is influenced by South African food.

Our recipes are inspired by what Vernon grew up with and include classics like banana bread, melk tart, crunchies, and other baked goods you’d find in a South African bakery.

South African cuisine is shaped by many cultures, so some of our food may feel familiar, but it carries a South African influence through flavour, ingredients, and tradition.

Do you make sourdough bread?

Yes, sourdough is at the heart of what we do.

We use slow fermentation and traditional methods to create bread with depth of flavour, texture, and character. Our sourdough reflects both classic baking techniques and our own approach as an artisan bakery in London.

What makes Wild Goose different from other bakeries in London?

Wild Goose brings together high-level chef experience, South African heritage, and a focus on community.

It’s not just about the food. It’s about creating a space where people feel welcome, can slow down, and connect.

Where are you located?

We are based in East London, with bakeries in Forest Gate and Leytonstone.

Our Forest Gate location also houses our working kitchen, where bread and pastries are baked fresh daily.

Do you use local and seasonal ingredients?

Wherever possible, we source ingredients locally, follow the seasons, and use produce from our own edible garden.

Do you host events or community gatherings?

Yes. We regularly host supper clubs and South African braai Saturdays.

These are designed to be relaxed, social experiences where people can gather, share food, and spend time together.

What is a South African braai?

A braai is a South African-style BBQ, but it’s more about gathering than just cooking.

Food is cooked over fire, and people come together to eat, talk, and spend time together in a relaxed, informal way.

Where can I find a braai in London?

Wild Goose hosts a South African braai every Saturday in Forest Gate, East London. It’s a relaxed, community-led food experience built around fire, sharing, and connection.

Is Wild Goose just a bakery?

No … it’s more than that.

Wild Goose has become known as a place for sourdough, South African baking, and community. A space where people return not just for food, but for how it feels.

What are you doing for the planet?

Sustainability has been part of Wild Goose from the beginning.

We’ve been almost completely single-use plastic-free since 2014, using plant-based packaging and avoiding unnecessary waste wherever we can.

We don’t send anything to landfill. Everything is either recycled or turned into biofuel.

In the bakery, we work hard to minimise food waste. We’d always rather sell out than throw away, and anything unsold but still usable is repurposed into something new like.

We also prioritise seasonal ingredients and local suppliers to reduce unnecessary food miles.
